School security and guarding
**School Security and Safety**
School security is the safeguard for any location, especially schools. Implementing and adhering to security procedures is the true prevention and the first line of defense for school management against accidents and issues.
Schools can face various problems, whether individual or group-related, due to the different behaviors and environments of students, which can lead to conflicts within schools.
School Security and Safety
Schools have security personnel to ensure the safety and security of the school during and after the school day. Their duties include:
- 1. Maintaining the security of the main entrance gate, allowing only authorized persons, such as parents or individuals with official connections to the school, to enter. Entry and exit times for visitors must be recorded for future reference if needed.
2. Ensuring the safety of students during dismissal while they wait for their parents.
3. Protecting the school’s internal properties from vandalism and theft after the school day ends.
4. Assisting school administration in maintaining security during emergencies and contacting emergency services in cases of fire or other incidents.
Security Guard Room
A security room should be established at the school gate, equipped with the following:
- – Fire extinguishers and the school’s main fire alarm panel.
– Necessary sanitary facilities.
– A fast means of communication with the police or relevant authorities (hotline).
Duties of School Security Guards
The security guard is responsible for maintaining the safety of the school building, its equipment, and contents during their shift (from the moment they take over until handing it over to the next guard). Their responsibilities include:
- – Guarding the school and recording visitor details in a designated log. No one should be allowed entry after hours without official permission.
– Being fully knowledgeable of the school’s layout, including all entrances, exits, emergency doors, and safety equipment (fire extinguishers, fire alarms), and understanding their purpose and how to operate them when necessary.
– Ensuring the readiness and functionality of fire and alarm equipment and reporting any safety violations, as well as ensuring there are no combustible materials that could pose a danger to the building, notifying school management of any concerns.
Duties After the School Day
- – Ensuring all doors are locked.
– Making sure the electricity is turned off and gas lines are shut off from all equipment and machinery.
– Turning off lights, air conditioners, fans, especially exhaust fans, and closing water faucets and valves.
– Continuously patrolling the building during the shift, paying particular attention to high-risk areas, and taking immediate action on any observations.
– Inspecting the building’s exterior to ensure its safety and that no hazardous or flammable materials are near it.
– Writing a daily report that includes all observations and actions taken, and presenting it to the direct supervisor.
– Handing over and receiving the school on an official form that records all observations and actions taken during the shift.
– Contacting civil defense and school management in case of any threats to the school’s safety, such as fire or emergencies.
Emergency Procedures
In case of an accident or fire, the security guard should:
- – Activate the alarm system and contact civil defense and fire departments.
– Ensure all gas valves are closed, the electricity is turned off, and the power is stopped at the accident site.
– Immediately notify the direct supervisor about the incident.
– Guide school staff and occupants to the nearest exits and gather them in a designated safe area.
– Go to the incident site and attempt to extinguish the fire if possible using available fire-fighting equipment.
– Direct the civil defense teams to the location of the fire.
– Gather data and information about the incident and prepare a report accordingly.
