How to Select Security Guards

The Security and Money Transport Companies Law No. 86 of 2015 regulated the sector and set essential standards for selecting security guards, especially after some companies neglected selection criteria and allowed randomness to prevail. This law was introduced to improve and develop this important sector. The general criteria for selecting a security guard include:

  • – Successfully completing the basic training required for the job.
    – Being physically, mentally, and medically fit for duty.
    – Having full knowledge of security rules and protocols, as well as the ability to interact appropriately with people.
    – Being trained in observation skills and how to respond to incidents such as attacks, sabotage, or disasters that may affect facilities.
    – Having the psychological readiness to react quickly to counteractions.
    – Being trained in handling situations that may arise during service, cooperating effectively with colleagues, and promptly reporting to supervisors or responsible authorities.

 Legal Requirements (Law No. 86 of 2015 and its Executive Regulations)

Article 7 of the regulations specifies the following conditions for security guards:

  • 1. Must be an Egyptian citizen with Egyptian parents.
    2. Must have a good reputation and sound character.
    3. Must not have been convicted of a criminal offense under the Penal Code or any equivalent crime under special laws, or sentenced to a custodial sentence for crimes involving dishonesty or breach of trust, unless they have been rehabilitated.
    4. Must be at least 21 years old at the time of licensing, verified through a national ID card or birth certificate.
    5. Must be able to read and write, proven by an educational certificate or a certified literacy certificate.
    6. Must have completed military service, been exempted, or had service deferred according to Law No. 127 of 1981.
    7. Must be medically fit, proven by a certified medical report from a government hospital or accredited institution, ensuring the guard’s physical fitness, hearing ability, and freedom from disabilities that could impair job performance. Vision must be at least 6/18 without glasses, and the guard must not suffer from mental or psychological disorders or nervous system issues.
    8. Must complete a 21-day training course on facility security duties, weapons use, and shooting, conducted at the relevant police department’s training center. This program is established by the Ministry of Interior’s Training Division in cooperation with the Public Security Division.
    9. For cash transport guards, they must undergo a 21-day training course at the National Institute for Security and Insurance, focusing on vehicle security, handling valuables, and weapons training. A certified certificate must be issued upon successful completion of the course.
