Guard dogs and technological progress
Guard Dogs and Technological Advancement
Despite the significant progress in technology, tools, security techniques, and modern protection systems, guard dogs remain irreplaceable in safeguarding facilities. Their natural ability, particularly their strong sense of smell, allows them to detect dangers from afar. Moreover, guard dogs stay alert at night, never leaving their post, and they bark loudly when any threat arises.
The Role of Guard Dogs
The importance of guard dogs, despite technological advancements, lies in their ability to save time and effort—two critical factors for the success of any security system. A trained dog can detect objects such as bodies, weapons, drugs, or explosives within just a few minutes, depending on the environment.
In Egypt, people commonly refer to all guard dogs as “police dogs” or “policies,” even though different breeds and types are used for security purposes. While dogs are intelligent, social, and easy to train, not every breed is suitable for security work. Certain breeds, such as the German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retriever, and Briard, are more suited to protection tasks.
Key Tasks of Guard Dogs
Guard dogs play a vital role in securing facilities. Their duties include detecting explosives, weapons, ammunition, and drugs, tracking criminals, identifying smells, searching for missing persons, crowd control, and inspecting bags in airports or ports. They also check vehicles before they enter secured areas and assist in crime prevention and defense. During disasters like earthquakes, these dogs act as a first line of defense by locating bodies before rescue teams arrive.
Technological Advancements in Guard Dog Training
The training methods for guard dogs have evolved, with science and technology enhancing their capabilities. Companies that provide security services use dogs that undergo the same rigorous training as police dogs. These dogs are trained to help maintain order, secure facilities, prevent prison escapes, and chase criminals. They have been instrumental in solving complex cases and ensuring the safety of various locations.
In recent years, technology has been integrated into dog training to improve security operations. For example, guard dogs can now be equipped with modern devices such as cameras and remote command transmitters. A camera mounted on the dog’s head and a high-quality earpiece allow trainers to give commands from a distance. The dog can then locate the target and signal the discovery of explosives or other threats.
